Stay of up 90 days
Canadians and citizens of countries not submitted to a short
stay visa, may go to France without a visa in an internship or
as volunteers if they stay a total of 90 days or less. However,
they must hold the original of the internship agreement ("convention
de stage") before departure to France. The "Convention
de stage" document is issued by the DDTEFP ("Direction
départementale du travail, de l'Emploi et de la formation
professionnelle") i.e. the Department of Employment in France.
There is one DDTEFP in each province in France. Click
here to see what a "convention de stage" looks like. Other
nationalities, check
the list of countries not submitted to a short stay visa. IF
yours does not appear on it, you must apply for a visa before departure
to France. If you go for less than 90 days, apply
for a short stay visa. If you go for more than 90 days and
up to six months, you need to apply for a temporary long stay visa.
If the internship last longer than 6 months, you need a long stay
visa. This specific kind of visa will allow you to apply for the
mandatory residence permit within two months after your arrival
to France.
Stay of more
than 90 days Any foreigner (except for citizens of the European Union and
of the European Trade zone) wishing to practice an internship in
France or to perform volunteer work for more than 90 days, needs
to apply for a long stay visa to the French consulate nearest his/her
place of residence, before departure to France. It is a mandatory
requirement in order to obtain the residence permit in France.
