Transit visa VTB
 

Important : Please notice that there are two kinds of transit visa: VTA and VTB. They serve different purposes. Make sure to read the information notice for each one of them to determine which one applies to you.

Procedure

Citizens of countries submitted to a short stay visa, need to possess a type "B" transit visa when traveling through France on their way to a country outside the Schengen region. It allows the bearer a maximum stay of 5 days in France. One, two or multiple entries could be granted depending on your itinerary.

Documents required

1) The following documents must be submitted only in original. They will be returned to you with the passport. You must take them on the trip for immigration authorities and also in case police require to see them. These documents will prove your legal status in France.

One application form. If your spouse and children (under 18) are registered in your passport, only you and your spouse need to fill out the form(s). However, a recent picture of the children must be glued on the back of one of the parent's form.
Children applying with their own passport submit separate application form(s) signed by their parents or legal guardian who must accompany the minor to the Consulate to apply. They must bring proper i.d.

Your original passport. It must be valid for at least 3 months after the end of the planned journey. Make sure there are at least 2 empty pages left on it.
When traveling without his/her parents, a minor (under 18) who needs to apply for a visa must present his/her own passport. The parents or legal guardian must sign the visa application form(s) and accompany the minor to the Consulate to apply. They must bring proper id.
A minor cannot apply with his parents' passport (even if he/she has been registered on it) unless they are traveling together.

The original of your Permanent Resident Card (and landing record), work authorization, or student authorization issued by the Canadian authorities. This documents must also be valid for at least 3 months longer after you leave the Schengen countries.

1 recent color photo, format 35mm x 45mm, with a clear plain background. The height must be between 31.5mm and 36mm from chin to crown. The person’s head must be full front view centered in the middle of the photograph. Photos with hat, caps, sunglasses, etc. will not be accepted nor digitized photos. This photo will be scanned in the visa.

 

2) The following documents must be submitted in original plus one photocopy of each per applicant (one set of xerox letter-sized photocopies per applicant. No thermal paper photocopies accepted).

Supporting documents concerning the means of transportation and return to your country of origin or of permanent residency (usually to return to Canada):
- a detail flight reservation itinerary for an airplane ticket to your final country of destination;

Supporting documents concerning accommodation during your stay :
- reservations in a hotel or a similar establishment (faxed confirmation from the hotel to the applicant stating the establishment's name, address and telephone number). To book a hotel reservation www.franceguide.com
- or a proof of accommodation ("attestation d'accueil"). This is an official document which must be obtained by the person offering lodging, sent to you in original and then submitted with your visa application. It can be obtained free of charge from the city hall ("mairie") or police station ("Préfecture") nearest his/her place of residence in France. A plain letter or invitation does not replace this document neither does it replace the applicant's proof of financial resources.

Supporting documents concerning financial resources :
- an international credit card (write the name of the card i.e. Visa, Amex, MasterCard - and the expiration date in section 36 of the application form. When applying by mail, send a photocopy IN ADDITION TO
- a letter from your bank (confirmation of balance) stating that you have a minimum of $CAN 70.00 per day of stay in France ($CAN 35.00 if you possess a Proof of Accommodation certificate). Your full name must appear on it. Cash and Bank books not accepted.

Supporting documents concerning medical insurance :
- excess emergency medical insurance (or proof of full international medical coverage) for the duration of your stay in France or in the Schengen states. Provincial plan not accepted. It can be purchased at any travel agency. Write the policy number in section 36 of the application form. Submit the original brochure (no photocopy needed) specifying the terms and conditions. If your spouse/children are covered by your employer's insurance, provide a letter from your company stating so.

Additional documents :
- Letter from your employer stating seniority, how long you are allowed to take holidays and when are you expected to return to work. Include the latest pay statement in original plus copy.
- For students, your valid student card or a letter from your school.

Please note that the photocopies as well as the originals are mandatory. If they are missing, your file will be considered incomplete.
If for a special reason you don't have the original, submit two photocopies of the copy you have. We will stamp these documents and return them so that you can take them on the trip.

Time process

Depending on your nationality, it can take between 2 and 8 working days to process the visa. For some nationalities it can take up to 15 working days.
Normally, only applications from residents in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon or the Northwest Territories are accepted. Visitors to Western Canada may apply although processing their application takes longer. It is your responsibility to apply at least three weeks in advance.

WARNING:

Your application may be delayed or refused. Do not buy an airplane ticket prior to obtaining confirmation that the visa will be issued.

Incomplete applications cannot be processed. When applying by mail, the file will be returned or sent back by courier service at your own expense.
