EU citizens wishing to study in France

Entering France.

Citizens of a Member State of the European Union may enter the French territory upon presentation of an identity card or a valid passport.

Studying in France.

• If you wish to pursue higher education for less than three months, you do not need a residence permit ("carte de séjour").

• If you wish to pursue higher education for more than three months, you need a residence permit ("carte de séjour").
Within the first three months of your arrival in France, you must go to the "préfecture" of your place of residence in France and request a residence permit.

To obtain it, you must submit :

A letter from the university or school stating that you are registered to follow their courses.

Proof of full-coverage health insurance.

Proof of sufficient financial resources to live in France such as a letter from your bank stating that you have the equivalent of $800.00 CAN in your account per month of stay in France.

Minor students (under 18)

Minor students going to France for a school year who possess a valid passport from one of the European Union countries, do not need to apply for a visa nor a residence permit to stay in France up to eleven months.

However, in addition to their passport, they should bring to France documents that prove the purpose of their stay in France such as a letter from their parents, from their host family, from the school they will be attending and full coverage for medical expenses and civil liability as well as vaccinations. Check the list of documents requested to citizens of countries submitted to a visa.

If they become of age between that period of time, they must apply for a carte de séjour soon after they turn 18.
