| Poitou-Charentes is placed
under the sign of the sea. Sea was important in the past
as the port of La Rochelle with its old remparts and its
medieval houses became wealthy during the 18th century,
thanks to the trade in wines, salt, sugar and spices.
This flourishing epoque has let its print in the streets
of the marine city but also in Rochefort, which was a
very active center for naval construction under the reign
of Louis XV. |

But we can't
sum up Poitou-Charentes to this glorious past. Thanks
to the natural assets of the coast of Poitou-Charentes,
the marine facet of this region please visitors with its
long and sunny beaches and with its two main islands,
l'île de Ré and l'île d'Oléron.
These preserved aeras are an invitation to relaxation
and to get revitalized with the pure marine air. And if
you want to discover the inside land, don't forget to
admire the golden glow of the vineyard around Cognac (this
town has given its name to a famous liqueur) or the meanders
of the River Charente. |
| You
can also enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of the marshland
known as the Marais Poitevin or to experience the thrills
and excitment of image technology at the Futuroscope.
Finally, the contrast between the architecture of tomorrow
of the fururoscope and the ancient cathedrals and churches
of Poitiers best expresses the all-out diversity of
Poitou-Charentes!
