Franche-Comté

Its geographical location makes Franche Comté a truly central region in Europe. Franche-Comté is the region of open-spaces and also a woody aera as the forest represent 43% of the land. More secretly, the underground world of Franche-Comté is composed by more than 9000 caves and abysses.

Franche-Comté is at the cross of several cultural and historic influences. From the Roman Empire to the French king Louis 14, Spanish or the dukes of Wurtemberg, a lot of foreign powers tried to conquer this strategic land. Each of them let its print, building a unique heritage. The region was annexed to France in 1678, by Louis XIV. Besançon is its traditional capital.

Franche-Comté is a region fond of sports, in the summer as in winter. Outdoor activities are numerous and can be practised at every level. The Jura Mountains provide also a winter sports alternative to the Alps. With its abundance of wide open spaces, mountains, forests and rushing waters, its architectural heritage, its picturesque villages, its fine cuisine and excellent wines, Franche Comté is offering an escape to a quality of life.
