Aquitaine

As far as you can see, a long, golden, beautiful beach on which ocean waves come and die: 270 kilometers of protected shore, from the Pointe de Grave headland to the Bidassoa river, at the foot of the Pyrenees. Aquitaine provides beginners or experienced surf-lovers with the best surfs in Europe. Behind the dune bar that, despite man's efforts, keeps on creeping over land, a forest was planted a century ago: more than one million hectares of maritime pines that hold the dunes.

Shaped by the turmoil of history, Aquitaine is a region where the vestiges of ancient times remain in great numbers. To the North, the Périgord region, "the cradle of art and humanity", offers many prehistoric sites which pass on the moving artistic message of man's thousand year old evolution. Prestigious vestiges as Lascaux, the prehistoric "Sistine chapel", Madeleine, Rouffignac, Eyzies de Tayac; they attract thousands of visitors each year.
The Pyrenees mountain, which in its Basque part exceeds 2,000 meters only at Pic d'Orthy, offers its green meadows, its moor and above all its typical villages where tradition and folklore still mingle with natives' life for tourists' delight (Basque pelota, strength games, dances and fairs). Further South, the Pyrenees range rises as to offer in the Natural Park's magnificent setting, every instance of mountain sports, summer hiking, climbing, as well as snow fields and developped resorts that allow the practice of all the winter sports.

History has sometimes such mischievous ways ! Aquitaine. The land of water, so called by Julius Caesar, is also a land which yields the most famous wineyards in the world. In Aquitaine, you will see, nobody escapes the wine tradition. Whether you own a vine or not, whether you are a brotherhood member, enlightened amateur or simple neophyte, it doesn't matter ! More than two thousand years of communal life have woven close ties between man and vine.
